Singapore - Why it matters

Every day on Page 2 of The Straits Times, reporters write about why certain news reports matter to readers. This is a weekly round-up of the columns.

Singapore will be getting a second Central Business District, planned around the future high-speed rail terminus in Jurong. Business reporter Wong Siew Ying noted that firms are spoilt for choice as a host of commercial clusters have been announced, so the second CBD needs to be exceptional to attract companies. http://str.sg/45cs

Senior Health Correspondent Salma Khalik said the recent recommendation to protect whistle-blowers in healthcare is good, but a sad reflection of the state of healthcare institutions. It means either that healthcare staff who notice something wrong do not feel they should raise it to their superiors; or that, if they do, their superiors do not act on the information. http://str.sg/45wk

Experts say it is high time contempt of court, the only criminal offence based on common law built on past judgments, is written into the statutes. But reporter Chong Zi Liang noted that any potential statute that sets limits on free speech will generate concern among an increasingly vocal public. http://str.sg/454w

Reporter Janice Heng welcomed the news of stricter regulations for escalator maintenance and testing and said that the Building and Construction Authority's proactive stance should be applauded. http://str.sg/4iCS

Temasek Holdings reported its first portfolio decline since the 2009 global financial crisis.Economics Correspondent Chia Yan Min said the decline was not surprising since about three-fifths of Temasek's holdings are tied up in listed assets which were dragged down by weak stock markets. http://str.sg/4izX
