SINGAPORE
– A vaccination drive was held yesterday to protect 28 senior citizens against
pneumococcal disease – an infection which can cause pneumonia.
The
Aljunied Cluster Grassroots Organisations (GROs) and Good Life Co-operative (TGLC),
which promotes healthcare to senior citizens, organised the event at Garden
Residents’ Committee Centre for residents of Bedok Reservoir-Punggol
constituency.
Nurses
and a doctor from the co-operative carried out the free vaccinations.
Normally
the jabs, which last for up to 10 years, cost between $150 and $180.
Mdm Yam
Meng Wah, 73, who received the vaccine, said: “This is a good initiative as it
is convenient and free. Vaccination will help us stay healthy and active.”
Dr Carol
Tan, chairman of TGLC, said: “We decided to collaborate with Aljunied Cluster
GROs, to bring healthcare to the community, as the elderly may be immobile and
unaware of the existence of this vaccine.”
The
donations were sponsored by healthcare giant Pfizer Singapore.
